‘Sydney: The Inspector General & Astro-YES’

Writer's picture: DeDe WatkinsDeDe Watkins

The first of “The Sydney Chronicles” about Sydney Marie Stewart and her Kid Brother James Stewart. Joe Bill and I frequently tell Skyler and Jimmy the funny, smart or sweet things Sydney does or says when we’re with her. Jimmy keeps telling me that I need to write things down. Well, I’ve come up with a way of letting you know too. It won’t hurt my feelings if you don’t read my emails, I certainly don’t expect anyone to write me back and if you want me to delete your name, I’ll be happy to do that. I’ll never know if you’ve added me to the “junk mail” section in your computer.

I wanted to share a few details about Sydney’s life:

No surprise, Sydney said the cutest thing when we were driving her home. As I’m sure you know, she loves pointing out the moon when she sees it. That’s when I said: “Syd’s going to be an Astronaut when she grows up.” That clever little girl just beamed when she told me: “I won’t be an Astro-NOT. I’ll be an Astro-YES! Her brain is out of this world, isn’t it?!! No one is ever going to call her a Space Cadet!

I’m thinking that if Syd doesn’t become an Astro-YES that she’s going to be The Inspector General of our country. Syd is always inspecting things and she certainly notices everything…there’s no detail too small not to be noticed by that observant adorable 2½ year old. We often eat red SEEDLESS grapes. I frequently tell Syd the exact name of whatever we’re eating so she can ask for that item in the future. (For example, she doesn’t just ask for cheese…she wants thinly sliced Low Sodium Munster Cheese!) One day Syd showed me a teeny tiny seed that was in her, so called, Red SEEDLESS Grapes. The next day little “Eagle Eyes” spotted another one. We’re now calling them Red Grapes NOT Red SEEDLESS Grapes! The same girl, who will pick up something off the floor and eat it (before I can stop her) wants to make sure that everything has been washed, which it has. Perhaps being a food inspector might be in her future.

Other examples of why she could become The Inspector General: Syd’s a perfectionist when it comes to her Barbies. She asked me to cut off the tiny strings at the bottom of two of their dresses. Next, she was complaining that one Barbie had “bad hair.” As you know, Barbie isn’t allowed to have a “Bad Hair Day.” Then she noticed that Cheerleader Barbie’s legs were different from the other Barbies. I pointed out that Cheerleader Barbie can bend so that she can do her acrobatic moves. I told her that Barbie is very flexible like she is. She wanted to know why one Barbie had a teeny tiny hole in her finger…I explained that’s where her ring had been attached. One Barbie’s dress didn’t fit perfectly, so she asked me to fix it. Tape and Velcro are now kept close to her “Barbieville” for “emergency” purposes.

By the way, I’m still doing my best to stop “Barbieville” from becoming a Nudist Camp. Syd often tries to take their clothes off. She even asks us to help her but we won’t. No surprise, the Barbie she likes the best is the NAKED one. I named her “Hippie Hollow Barbie.” Syd likes taking her everywhere. One day that naked doll was left in the backseat of JB’s car. He’d gone into the office only to find when he got back to his car that naked Barbie was visible. Who knows what people at VE are thinking about him!

By the way, I might need to hire an assistant for Syd to take care of all of her requests: She wanted help with her Barbies, a grilled cheese sandwich, a refill of her juice bottle, for me to get my DVD player out of the car so she could watch a movie, and she needed a pillow and soft blanket so that she’d be comfy watching her film! Of course, all of her requests were made at the same time. She “outsources” her multitasking to me!

Sydney is an outgoing, bright, sweet, gorgeous and loving little girl. When we picked her up at Preschool she turned to her classmates and said: “Goodbye, friends!” It’s clear that she’s learned about friendship from watching how her family treats people. Do we see being a candidate in her future?

As you well know, Syd and her darling kid brother Baby James bring much joy to all of our lives. Skyler and Jimmy are the best parents…but it’s clear that they have wonderful parents and grandparents as their role models! Sydney and Baby James are surrounded by love…what a great way to grow up!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING

Love, D2 & JB
