Sydney was sitting on Joe Bill’s comfy denim blue couch as happy as could be while she was watching a ‘Dora the Explorer’ program that he had recorded for her on his HD Television. Then she started loudly yelling: “Where’s Dora? What’s happened to her?” It’s as if Dora, that spunky popular Hispanic animated character, had been kidnapped. Suddenly Dora was gone and Syd wanted answers immediately: “Where on Earth is Dora?”
Syd got a quick lesson in COMMERCIAL Television 101…it HAS COMMERCIALS! It seems that Syd just discovered a television ad. We rarely have the TV on when she’s with us. She’s usually watching animated movies on my little DVD player. At home Skyler and Jimmy have a number of DVDs too. Syd isn’t just left in front of a TV to watch whatever might be on like I was. She could be one of the few humans on the planet who hasn’t been bombarded with commercials during the middle of a program.
I think that Syd was speaking for all of us when she was demanding to know where had her program gone. She loudly announced: “I DON’T WANT COMMERCIALS!” We’re with her on that.
Dora’s program has sparked Syd’s interest in speaking Spanish. I’m not good at Spanish but I do know a few words so I encourage her to speak Spanish when she’s with us.
Today we were talking about “chicos” being boys and “chicas” being girls. When I pointed out to Syd that she’s a “chica” she set me straight that she’s a “SQUIRREL”…perhaps, you’ll remember from an earlier “Chronicle” that she’s not a ferret or just some run of the mill “Squirrel”…she’s “DADDY’S LITTLE SQUIRREL!”
I can’t wait until she’s old enough to fill out papers at schools and other locations and will be writing in “Squirrel” when they want to know her race or some other innocuous question. It could work in her favor being a “Squirrel.” Syd might be the only one who will be given a scholarship that’s earmarked for “Squirrels!”
JB was commenting on Syd’s adorable hair style today. She had her hair in pigtails, which always makes cute Sydney look even cuter. When JB was asking her if she was a little girl with pigtails Syd told him: “I’m a Squirrel with pigtails!” Now that Syd is “potty trained” and is using public bathrooms, I don’t know if she’s going to start demanding that there be a special BATHROOM for “SQUIRRELS. ” I’ll keep you posted on that.
By the way, we always have juice in the car for Syd and Baby James. Today she drank her juice really really fast. She smiled and told us that she’d “chugged it!” Sometimes I ask her where she’s learned a word…sometimes I don’t. Today was one of the days when I didn’t want to ask!!! It could be that she’s been sneaking over to UT or 6th Street!
