‘Sydney: Say No Way, to the P.J.’

Perhaps you’ve seen the hit cable show “Say Yes to the Dress.” While we were babysitting for ‘Date Night’ I felt like we were participating in the spinoff with Sydney Marie Stewart starring in “Say No Way, to the P.J.”

For years, JB has called me Miss Picky…well, I’m here to tell you that I’m a lightweight compared to little Miss Sydney. That girl has set a new bar for pickiness.

Her Nanny had picked out a cute Dora nightgown for Sydney to sleep in but after her bath Syd was saying: “No Way, Jose” to Dora. Syd decided she wanted to put on the “big pajamas.” Okay, how hard can that be? Well, little did I know that I was going to be on a treasure hunt.

First, I held up Syd in her closet to find what she wanted but we struck out. She then sat on JB’s lap while I paraded things in front of her. She started acting like a mini Simon Cowl when he was judging “American Idol.” I kept showing her pajama after pajama and she kept giving a thumbs down to each one.

I’d even reached a point where I was suggesting that she wear some of her REGULAR clothes to bed. Syd would roll her big beautiful brown eyes, shake her darling little head from side to side and say in a disapproving way: “THAT’S CLOTHES!”Of course, I KNEW they WEREN’T things that you were SUPPOSED to sleep in but we were running out of time for her to make her night curfew. No babysitter worth their salt wants their charge to be up when Mommy and Daddy get home, so I kept digging thru her closet.

JB was beginning to think we were being “played” so Syd could stay up later. He’s thinking that finding the “big pajamas” was as likely as finding Big Foot or the Loch Ness Monster!

Finally, much to my surprise and relief, I found what she wanted to wear. Syd bounced out of JB’s arms, jumped up and down dancing a cute little jig, pumping her fists while enthusiastically proclaiming: “You found them! You found them! We did it! We did it!” You’d have thought that we won the lottery. Perhaps I did. I didn’t have to keep going thru her closet anymore!

Take this story as a WARNING and I’m offering this SUGGESTION to anyone who’s going to babysit Syd: Bring NEW pajamas with you. She’ll be dazzled with their newness and she’ll forget about anything that she’d been thinking about wearing. As for another tip, get her PJs with the feet. The little fashionista is into that style!

By the way, we’ve also had the opposite experience. A while back when we weren’t sure where her pajamas were, we decided to ask Sydney to pick out what SHE wanted to wear to bed. She bolted out of her bedroom and immediately came back holding her beautiful fancy ruffled raspberry ballet dress. She was so excited that we’d let her put it on. It’s clear that she was waiting for the moment when she’d be asked: “What do YOU want to wear to bed?”

On another topic, sometimes Sydney takes things literally, which makes for the funniest discussions.

I was talking to her about being with her relatives when she told me that her Granddaddy Papa Jim was “stuck.”

I then asked her if she was able to help him. She said: “No, because I’m just a little girl.” Then I asked: “WHERE was he stuck?” She responded: “He was STUCK ON HIS COMPUTER!!!” Luckily, she didn’t call 911 to help her Granddaddy get “unstuck!”

Love, D2
