‘Sydney, James & Jack Are Hooked On The UT Longhorns!’

Writer's picture: DeDe WatkinsDeDe Watkins

This was a week of Firsts:

It was the First week of school for Sydney (First Grade) and James (Kindergarten) at their new school. It was the First win of the Season for The Longhorn Football Team with the school's First black Head Coach Charlie Strong. As they're sayin' in Austin: The Horns are off to a 'Strong Start!' And we were all thrilled when we saw The Tower turn ORANGE in honor of UT beating North Texas 38 to 7! (See the 2 short VIDEOS of the Opening Festivities.)

Sydney, James and their surrogate little brother Jack were all dressed up for GAME DAY! The Kids love BEVO. All three of them have plenty of ORANGE BLOOD. James has a new take on doing the 'Hook 'Em Horns' sign...he was lifting only one finger instead of two!

James and Sydney enjoy wearing colorful clothing. For some unknown reason they love putting on their galoshes. I always think that it's funny when they wear their rain boots since we're in a major drought. I guess they're optimistic that it might rain hard here one day. It did drizzle a little on Saturday. I had Syd and James run outside so they could look at a rainbow....something we haven't seen in ages. In her own clever way Syd announced: "We're seeing a DRYBOW...NOT A RAINBOW!"

Skyler showed me Syd and James' new school. I thought it was great. I included a picture of a mural on the school's wall. It's a good example of the cheery way their school is decorated. Their classrooms looked upbeat too. Syd told me that there are a lot of new rules, new people and new places that they go but she's up for the challenge and seems happy to be there. James is having a good transition too. It's clear that they really enjoy being on the playground. It's a great place for them to make new friends.

Like homes all over America, as you can tell from my pictures, all of us spend a lot of time reading to Syd, James and Jack. Syd loves helping James and Jack. She never makes fun of them if they're having a hard time. She encourages them and like a 'school marm' she keeps tabs on their progress.

As soon as Syd, James and Jack get to our house they usually start drawing on the art tablets we have for them. Syd often draws an elaborate picture and then writes a line or two. This time Syd wrote a detailed story about Snow White and the Evil Queen. Her piece was quite impressive. She used words like 'replied' and 'furious.' After complimenting Syd about her creative writing skills, I gave her the correct spelling for some of the words she used. Syd was not defensive. In fact, she thanked me and started making the changes immediately. Mommy Skyler was working with her about punctuation even though she's only 6 years old.

Syd loves learning new things. She'll be the First to tell you that!

Joe Bill and I hope that you had a fun Labor Day Weekend.

Love, D2
