Sydney has an incredible vocabulary, especially in light of the fact that she won’t be 3 years old until next month.
Sydney’s always loved learning new words and I’ve thrown lots of big ones at her. Joe Bill used to wince when I’d suggest that she say things like condensation and deciduous. (Those are the type of trees and shrubs that lose their leaves seasonally.)
Competitive Little Miss Sydney Marie Stewart loves a challenge and makes sure that she says each new word correctly. Remarkably, she doesn’t get frustrated even if it takes her a couple of tries to get something right.
I started with words like Potassium and Beta-carotene when Syd was only 17 or 18 months old, when she was eating bananas and sweet potatoes at our house. I thought these were good words since Skyler had told me that she’s interested in healthy food. I’m not saying that Jimmy’s not interested in healthy food…but I’m sure you can guess which one of them would reach for the bag of Doritos and who would go for Barbara’s Low Sodium, Cholesterol Free, Gluten and Trans Fat Free, Reduced Sugar, Anti Oxidant Filled, Organic, All Natural Ingredients, No Artificial Flavors, No Additives or Preservatives, Tasty “Good For You” Snacks!
When I first started taking Syd off on adventures, Skyler also had told me that she was interested in her little girl knowing about the environment. Over the months we’ve played games with each of us counting specific types of trees on our side of the car. During the Summer we counted Crape Myrtles. There were lots of beautiful ones on our routes around town including in front of the Stewart house.
This Fall we started counting Pyracanthas. They’re the large thorny evergreen shrubs that produce bright red or orange berries in late Autumn. You’ve seen them a million times, even though, you perhaps don’t know the formal name for them.
There are a couple of huge colorful Pyracantha shrubs in front of some homes on the route from Syd’s preschool to her house. She likes to yell, and I mean yell at the top of her lungs, the word PYRACANTHA when we drive past them.
Sydney’s Nanny Cousin Jennifer drives Syd on some days. One day Jennifer asked Skyler WHY Syd repeatedly yelled out PROPOGANDA when they passed certain houses. Jenn didn’t realize that Syd was screaming PYRACANTHA NOT PROPOGANDA!!!! It’s possible that the people, who live in those homes, are asking the same question!
Love, D2
