Most women love to have people compliment their homes. I know that I like it when someone says something positive about where we live…but I have to admit that I’ve never had a compliment like the one Sydney gave me.
First, I need to say that we really have fun when we take Sydney out and about. She’s very polite and expresses interest in the places we’ve taken her…she acts like a ‘Big Girl’…but I’ve noticed that she’s apprehensive about public bathrooms. It’s because those large toilets flush so loudly and have a sound that make you feel like you’re going to be sucked in and flushed all the way to China! For a little 3 year old the experience is somewhat frightening. When we’ve been out, Syd has expressed her apprehension. I’ve reassured her that she’ll be fine when she uses the commode in public places.
One day when we got back to our house, in her sweetest little girl voice Syd said: “Your potty makes the NICEST SOUND!!!” I thanked her, saying that I was happy that she liked our potty. Later in the day she told me: “Your potty is PERFECT for a little girl like me.” I again thanked her and thought these are the two most unusual compliments I’ve ever gotten.
Going to the potty at our house is a pretty big deal because we’re trying to make sure that Syd doesn’t have ‘accidents’ all over the house…mainly, we don’t want her to pee on JB’s favorite couch. Sometimes I have to encourage Syd to go to the potty by making it fun to get there. That’s when I have her get behind me like we’re in a Conga Line. We repeat the words: “Potty, potty, potty!” as we chant and dance our way into the bathroom. That works okay but the thing that really works the best is that Syd gets ice cream at the end of the day, if she hasn’t had an ‘accident’ and, luckily for us, lately she’s been getting lots of ice cream!
