We live in a neighborhood of Austin, where seeing a deer is more common than seeing a dog. Even though we’ve lived in this area for 25 years, I still get excited when I see a deer or two in our yard. For Joe Bill it’s a ho-hum event. Perhaps the reason we feel differently about these sightings is because I grew up in Dallas and he grew up in Llano, “The Deer Capital of Texas.”
When we were driving up our driveway the other day we saw two does, each with her newborn fawn. Sydney was in the car with us. We let her move up to the front seat since our car wasn’t moving so that she could get a better look. Her huge gorgeous brown Bambi like eyes were looking at a couple of real life Bambies. It was if we were in a fabulous Disney movie and we had front row seats.
One of the fawns was especially beautiful and his Mommy knew it. She was proud of her baby and wanted to show him off. I think that’s why she stood in the driveway for such a long time giving us an opportunity to really be able to see her gorgeous offspring. His skinny stick like legs looked a little wobbly. His spotted coat was shiny and his face was really pretty. His Mommy licked him much like a Momma cat licks her kitten. It was one of those special moments that we got to share with Sydney. Too bad that other Bambi…Baby James wasn’t with us. But he’ll likely see deer at our house one day too.
In the meantime, perhaps we need to put up a “Fawn Crossing” sign, like some of our neighbors have done!
Love, D2
