I just realized that someone needs to come up with Etiquette Classes for Skype Users. Perhaps Miss Manners could make up a list of ‘Dos and Don’ts’ of what’s appropriate while Skyping.
Ever since Sydney was first able to really communicate, her Mom and Dad taught her to say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’…first, in sign language and later with the spoken word. Syd, who’s already a quick learner, will have to learn the new rules fast. B.A. (Bebet), who is always elegant and polite, would surely be disappointed if her Great Granddaughter Sydney was being anything other than polite.
It looks like Syd needs to know: “How to be polite when you’re Skyping with your Uncle, who’s on the opposite side of the world, in China, no less!”
Joe Bill and I were babysitting for ‘Date Night’ so that Jimmy and Skyler could be with friends now that Jimmy, Sydney and Grandmother Mary Ann (Ama) have returned from a fabulous 3 week trip to China. They were visiting Jimmy’s brother Kent, his wife and their 3 darling little girls.
By the way, when the 4 gorgeous cousins (with the eldest being 4 years old) were together sightseeing in China they had so many people snapping pictures of them, acting like the paparazzi and trying to get close to them, that Jimmy told us: “I felt like I was traveling with Brad and Angelina!” We’ve seen the videos. He wasn’t exaggerating.
The girls were being treated like International Rock Stars when they were dancing around looking very cute. As the crowd of on lookers continued to grow, in one video I could hear Jimmy saying: “Just move along…there’s nothing to see.” It’s clear that the Chinese didn’t feel that way. It appears that the Chinese were taken with the girls’ beauty, that they were Westerners and the fact that there were 4 of them. (China has a one child policy for many couples.)
It seems that looking at the 4 beautiful Stewart Girls was more fascinating to some Chinese than looking at some artifacts in the Forbidden City built in 1406! We certainly understand their fascination with the girls!
Syd was on the couch major league multitasking on her family’s fabulous new iPad watching the animated programs ‘Dora,” as well as “Max and Ruby,” while also playing games and on top of that she was looking at photos and videos from her China trip.
Syd realized that someone was contacting them via Skype. She was delighted it was her Uncle Kent. She got her face real close to the iPad screen and even kissed it. Syd talked to Kent for a minute or two and we did too. And then Syd HAD to get back to the truly important things…Dora, Max and Ruby. Syd, who’s really sweet, didn’t say: “Goodbye, Uncle Kent. I’m glad you called. Call again soon.” No, she just closed down the Skype site with Uncle Kent being in mid sentence. There was Syd abruptly hitting the ‘End’ button. JB and I are so technically challenged that we couldn’t get Kent back on Skype! JB left him a voice message on their phone and I emailed him using our somewhat ‘old’ technology.
Syd has always been a whiz kid at using technology. She could easily play games on her Mommy’s iPhone when she was only 2. She navigates Joe Bill’s iTouch effortlessly as she flips from Lady Gaga to Pink. Now watching her using their new iPad is incredible. Syd goes from movie, to games to photos with the ease of a NASA aerospace engineer. I can’t use most of the features on my iPhone. We still have a hard time getting the Stewart’s TV and DVD player to turn on. The good thing is that Syd will be able to do everything for me and JB and she’s only 3 years old!
Love, D2
